What is stroke?
Stroke, also known as cerebrovascular accident (CVA), can be divided into two categories:
- Ischaemic stroke (>70%): caused by blockage of blood vessels in the brain, leading to cerebral infarction
- Haemorrhagic stroke: caused by cerebral blood vessels rupture, leading to bleeding into the brain tissues and subsequent damage
Symptoms of Stroke


Our Stroke Physiotherapy Programme
- Early mobilisation or positioning to prevent contracture and bed sore
- Chest physiotherapy to maintain bronchial hygiene
- Strengthening exercise to restore strength of the affected limbs (e.g. exercises with electrical stimulation)
- Functional training (e.g. transfer training)
- Motor control and task-specific training (e.g. arm reaching exercises)
- Balance (e.g. weight shifting, proprioception training)
- Gait training with walking aids or exoskeleton
Prepare to return community:
- Fitness training
- Fall Prevention (e.g. addressing problems of muscle weakness, poor motor control/sensation/balance/ weight shifting, prescription of walking aids)
