The vision of the Department of Pathology is to become one of the leading pathology laboratories in Hong Kong. Our aim is to provide clinicians, patients and the general public with a comprehensive, state-of-the-art pathology service that is among the best in Hong Kong.

Since 2011, the Department has had a quality system in place that complies with the Laboratory Accreditation Requirements under ISO 15189. It has been reassessed over four completed cycles, with the latest reassessment successfully achieved in early 2024. Our divisions and laboratories have also passed the requirements for HOKLAS accreditation status, while microbiology has gained Accreditation Canada Diagnostics (ACD) status.

Our team of highly-qualified personnel receive continuous training to ensure they are up-to-date with current developments and advances in the industry. They are multi-skilled but also capable of handling specialised tests.

The Department’s strong multidisciplinary team of pathologists comprises two haematologists, three microbiologists and eight histopathologists. All are experts in their respective specialties and have been appointed as Honorary Associate Professors by the University of Hong Kong and/or Chinese University of Hong Kong. In our Molecular Pathology Division, we have eight scientists with PhD degrees, with specialties in genetics and genomic medicine as well as bioinformatics.

Services

The Department of Pathology comprises three divisions, namely the Clinical Pathology Division, the Histopathology & Cytology Division and the Molecular Pathology Division.

The Clinical Pathology Division has six sub-units, namely i)Haematology and ii) Blood Bank, iii) Chemical Pathology, iv) Microbiology and Immunology, v) Stem Cell and Flow Cytometry Laboratory and vi) Sleep Test Services. We are also in charge of a dedicated phlebotomy team, who serves all the inpatients and outpatients for taking blood and electrocardiograms. For services not available in-house, we can provide a customised send-out test service as requested by physicians.

In addition, we have a Histopathology & Cytology Division and a Molecular Pathology Division. The Histopathology & Cytology Division provides high quality diagnostic services in histopathology, cytology and surgical pathology (frozen sectioning) to clinicians, while the Molecular Pathology Division offers high quality molecular diagnostic services in infectious diseases, molecular oncology and genetic disorders.

Our modern laboratory facilities and equipment, which perform assays for more than 400 different analytes, comply with all industrial safety requirements.
