High-Speed Sports Injuries

In recent years high-speed sports such as skiing and water skiing have become popular among many Hongkongers. However injuries sustained during these sports can be much more severe. 

Tendons Twisted and Torn Apart due to Locked Lower Limbs 
In recent years, many Hongkongers have taken to skiing abroad during the Christmas holidays, the only time of year they typically hit the slopes. However, as most are novice skiers with limited practice, they face a significantly higher risk of injury. Research indicates that, on average, a skier suffers an injury once every 400 hours on the slopes, regardless of experience. 

One of the most vulnerable areas is the knee. When skiers lean forward, their kneecaps bear the full weight of the body, placing immense strain on the knee joints. With the lower limbs "locked" into ski boots and skis, any loss of balance can cause the knees to collapse inward. At high speeds, this can result in violent twisting forces that tear the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). In severe cases, the meniscus and cartilage may also be damaged. 

Other common injuries include Skier’s Thumb, which occurs when a skier falls with their thumb caught in the ski pole strap, leading to a torn ulnar collateral ligament or even a thumb fracture. Additionally, attempts to break a fall by extending the arms can result in wrist fractures, shoulder dislocations, or other upper limb injuries. 

Snowboarding, while offering similar thrills, may pose even greater risks. On average, one injury occurs every 200 hours of snowboarding – twice the rate of skiing. These injuries often involve the head, neck or spine and, in extreme cases, can be fatal. 

Losing Balance in Water skiing – Open Fracture 
While wearing a life jacket may give water skiers a sense of security, many underestimate the risks involved, especially when losing balance. Unlike snow skiing, water skiing poses unique and often more severe dangers due to the high-speed dynamics and force exerted by the towing boat. 

The most vulnerable moment for water skiers is at the start. They must quickly establish balance while being pulled at high speed. If they fail to do so and fall forward into the water, the consequences can be serious. Still gripping the tow rope, their arms are violently stretched, placing immense strain on the shoulders. This can lead to muscle strains, joint dislocations or even rotator cuff injuries. 

Falling into water at high velocity is not a gentle dive; it’s a high-impact collision. In extreme cases, if the skier collides with the boat or equipment, they may suffer open fractures or other traumatic injuries. The combination of speed, force and lack of control makes water skiing a sport that demands both physical preparedness and safety awareness.

While getting the hang of the techniques can minimise the risk of high-speed sports injury, enhanced body stability, coordination and agility can reduce the incidence and severity of sports-related injuries. 

The key to preventing skiing and water-skiing injuries is to have a well-prepared body. 

Warm-up stretches immediately before snow skiing or waterskiing are not enough. On top of regular cardiopulmonary exercises, daily targeted practice is also necessary to fully prepare the musculoskeletal system for high-speed sports. Early practice is of particular importance for skiing and should begin 2 to 3 months prior to the "real thing". This includes core stabilisation, shoulder training, lower limb power and endurance and coordination to strengthen and prepare yourself for any kind of accident. 

Additionally, postural alignment plays a crucial role. Practicing proper posture – standing or sitting with the head, neck, spine, and limbs in a neutral, aligned position – helps activate and strengthen the deep core muscles. A strong core provides stability, allowing the body to move with control rather than wobbling or overcompensating during dynamic actions. 

Cardiopulmonary fitness: Practise using an Arc Trainer for half an hour or longer. Not only does this improves cardiopulmonary function but also promotes limb and joint coordination for skiing. 

Core stabilisation and training of joints: Stand on unstable pads placed on a slanted surface. Act as if hitting or receiving a ball at speed and change position swiftly while standing. This helps to improve agility and coordination. 

Lower limbs can be stabilised by strengthening muscles used for swivelling the buttocks and thigh and calf muscles. 

Strengthen the muscles at the back of the thigh with a fitness machine. Regular training ensures lower limbs are well stabilised, thereby reducing torque pressure on the knees while skiing as well as the risk of an anterior cruciate ligament injury. 
 

Beyond physical fitness, maintaining high alertness is essential for safe participation in sports like skiing and water skiing. This is particularly true for skiing, where even a single afternoon on the slopes can be physically draining due to the effort of climbing hills while carrying heavy equipment. Many people begin their holidays already fatigued, working late nights, enduring long flights and heading straight to the ski resort without adequate rest. Similarly, water skiers, often in their twenties, may stay up late the night before and jump into action the next morning. Without proper rest, fatigue sets in quickly, significantly increasing the risk of injury. 

In addition to physical preparation, using properly fitted sports equipment and understanding safety protocols are crucial for injury prevention. Skiers renting gear at resorts should pay close attention to the length of the skis and the fit of the boots. Skis that are too long or heavy can become a burden, while poorly fitted boots may cause friction, leading to blisters or even warts. It’s also important for skiers to provide accurate information about their skill level so that staff can recommend suitable equipment. Ski gear should be easy to remove in the event of a fall, which can help reduce the severity of injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. 
 

Strict adherence to safety guidelines is the first rule in preventing sports injuries, especially in skiing. High-speed skiing on steep slopes requires advanced skills, and skiers must be honest with themselves about their abilities. Beginners should start on flatter slopes and only progress to steeper terrain after sufficient practice and ideally under the supervision of a professional coach. Skiing outside designated safety zones should always be avoided. Even experienced skiers are advised to begin each session on gentler slopes to allow their cardiovascular system to adjust to the high altitude and cold temperatures. 
 

Water skiers should always operate in designated safe zones, avoiding shallow waters and respecting speed limits. Maintaining a safe distance from other boats is essential, and vessels must never be overloaded. The boat engine should be turned off whenever a skier falls or is getting back onboard. Wearing a life jacket is non-negotiable, and all equipment should be checked beforehand. A well-fitted life jacket helps maintain core stability and flexibility, even after a fall. Communication between the skier and the boat pilot, ideally through hand signals, adds an extra layer of safety and coordination.
