質子及光子放射治療愈趨精準，成功追蹤腫瘤的重大突破是先進定位及導航技術的革新，例如磁力共振導航放射治療（MR-guided Radiotherapy），可在每次治療中更清晰、精確地對準腫瘤位置，集中射線以進一步提升治療的準繩度及劑量，達到最有效的腫瘤控制。
以胰臟癌為例，其位置位於腹部與盆腔深處，因此難以在早期階段發現，只有約15至20%患者適合接受根治性的手術，大部分患者也需要進行放療。惟受呼吸影響，腫瘤或附近器官的位置會有變化，因此傳統電療必須擴大靶區，避免靶點超出靶區而無法照射，確保足夠劑量。現時有一種電療方法——立體定位放射治療（Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy，簡稱SBRT），在影像導航技術的協助下，以極高的精準度及更高劑量進行電療。
胰臟癌電療縮短至 3-5 次
劑量得以更精準照射在靶點，可令療程由傳統方式的25至30次，大幅縮短為3至5次，約於兩星期內完成，患者可盡快繼續其他治療，如藥物治療及免疫治療等，以更有效地消滅癌細胞。目前醫學研究已經證明，立體定位放射治療的效果，足以媲美手術割除腫瘤，存活率亦有所提升。
除了成效，治療安全性也是關鍵。傳統上，胰臟癌放射治療的最大挑戰，是有機會令鄰近的十二指腸、胃部和小腸出現後遺症。現時新式的磁力共振放 射治療機器已配有追蹤腫瘤的技術（MotionManagement），可在治療期間同步追蹤腫瘤，當射線偏離軌道便會立刻停止。目前已有多項國際研究，將磁力共振電療納入胰腺癌治療中，其他研究亦顯示治療能將腸道副作用減少至10%或以下。多種新式治療方案均能兼顧高劑量與減輕副作用，對病人而言是個喜訊。
