Lung Cancer Screening

Lung cancer has been the leading cause of cancer mortality in Hong Kong and worldwide for the past decades. The poor prognosis for patients with lung cancer is largely due to late presentation. Large-scale research studies in the USA and Europe have shown that the mortality rate of lung cancer can be reduced by 20 to 30% in high-risk population groups with CT lung screening. For this reason, we recommend low-dose CT thorax screening for the following high-risk individuals:

Longtime smokers and ex-smokers (who have quit smoking for less than 15 years) aged > 50 years or

  • People with a family history of lung cancer (parents or siblings)
  • People with a past history of head and neck cancer
  • People with a past history of lung cancer
  • People with silicosis
  • People with COPD
