Diagnosis of Pleural Diseases (Pneumothorax and Pleural Effusion)
Pleural effusion can be caused by localised (due to pulmonary or pleural) or systemic (associated with heart failure or liver/kidney dysfunction) issues.
If diagnostic chest tapping could not identify the underlying cause, thoracoscopy is indicated. Thoracoscopy, is usually performed under local anaesthesia or monitored anaesthesia care. During the procedure, a thoracoscope is inserted into the pleural cavity through a small incision of about 1cm on the chest wall. The whole pleural cavity can then be examined under direction visualisation. If pleural lesions are found, they will be biopsied for further evaluation and the pleural fluid can be drained.
Thoracoscopy can also be used for therapeutic purposes, e.g. thoracoscopic pleurodesis for treating pneumothorax and recurrent malignant pleural effusion.
