Pre-implantation Genetic Testing

We use a number of advanced technologies during IVF to test for genetic diseases of embryos prior to their transfer to the uterus. These are Pre-implantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies – Abnormal Number of Chromosomes (PGT-A), Pre-implantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Diseases/Chromosomal Structural Rearrangements (PGT-M/SR) (previously known as Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS), and Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).

Pre-implantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies – Abnormal Number of Chromosomes (PGT-A)

The aim of PGT-A is to determine if the embryo contains the wrong number of chromosomes prior to pregnancy, by employing a new technology, Next–Generation Sequencing (NGS), to test the full 46 chromosomes of the embryo.

PGT-A may contribute to:

  • The selection of an embryo with normal chromosome number for transfer to improve implantation, and
  • Reduced risk of delivering a baby with common chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down syndrome.

PGT-A may be recommended for couples with

  • Recurrent miscarriage
  • Repeated IVF/ICSI failure
  • Advanced maternal age

PGT-A is not recommended for women with poor ovarian response because it may lower the chance of embryo transfer.

Pre-implantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Diseases /Chromosomal Structural Rearrangements (PGT-M/SR)

PGT-M/SR is used to test for a specific genetic disease when one or both of the couple have a known genetic abnormality. PGT-M/SR helps couples not only prevent the birth of a baby with a serious genetic disease, but also avoid the physical and psychological trauma from termination of pregnancy.

PGT-M/SR may be recommended if a couple has:

  • A serious genetic disease or carries that particular disease
  • A family history of a serious genetic disease
  • A child with a serious genetic disease

Alternatives
An alternative to PGT-A or PGT-M/SR is to undergo a prenatal diagnosis during pregnancy or gametes donation. Please consult our doctors if you have any enquiries.

Cost
Fees for PGT-A and PGT-M/SR are in addition to the cost of the IVF cycle. Please contact our staff for details.

Under the laws of Hong Kong, sex selection is prohibited, except for the avoidance and prevention of a severe sex-linked genetic disease.
