Laser-assisted In-situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
Our centre was the first in Hong Kong to employ LASIK surgery techniques to correct refractive errors, including myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. As of October 2024, more than 120,000 eyes had been performed using LASIK, allowing 95-98% of patients to achieve unaided 20/20 vision within 3 months. About 94% had refraction within 1 dioptre. Uncorrected vision (i.e. without glasses) improved dramatically and stabilised after 3 months. Complications were very infrequent.
In 2026, the first in Hong Kong to introduce WaveLight Plus technology, creating personalized 3D eye models to plan highly customized LASIK surgeries.
LASIK involves two major steps: cutting a flap and reshaping curvature of the cornea. First, a corneal flap is cut using the femtosecond laser. Second, with the flap created, an excimer laser is applied to the stromal (middle) layer to reshape the cornea.
