General X-ray

Discovered in 1895, X-ray is an electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength, measured in picometers, beyond the range of human vision. It is produced by firing an electron on a metallic target, usually made of tungsten.

X-ray is a fast and painless examination. It is used widely in medical imaging because of its ability to penetrate materials. The degree of penetration depends on the density of the specific material. When an X-ray beam passes through the body, it is absorbed in different amounts as organs have different densities. After projection on the receptor, the X-ray forms shades of gray that demonstrate internal structures.

Are X-rays Safe?

A medical X-ray examination is safe. Although radiation exposure carries a risk of causing cancer, the amount of radiation dose is very low and far below the dose that can cause damage. The benefits obtained outweigh the risks. Sensitivity to radiation depends on the organ irradiated and the age of the patient. Generally speaking, children are more radio-sensitive than adults. 

As a safety precaution, the radiographer will provide a lead shield, if possible, to cover radiosensitive organs such as the gonadal region to reduce potential irradiation by scattered radiation. 

Patient caregivers who assist with the X-ray examination will occasionally be required to wear a lead apron. 

X-ray is generally not used on pregnant patients because of the increased risk of radiation exposure to the foetus. Therefore, it is important to inform the staff if you are or may be pregnant. 

To prevent accidentally irradiating the foetus, female patients between the reproductive ages of 11 and 60 will be asked before an X-ray examination when their last menstrual period (LMP) occurred. Depending on the region of exposure and radiation dose of the examination, the 10-day or 28-day rule will be applied. If the LMP was the day after the rule date, the X-ray examination will not be performed, except in emergency situations or if a negative laboratory test of pregnancy has been obtained.

Please note that some examinations use different equipment in different rooms. This is why it might look like some patients are going ahead of you while you are waiting, but this is not the case.
