Targeted Therapy for Children

As a precision-based cancer treatment, targeted therapy works on specific genetic mutations or molecular pathways that sustain tumour growth. Specially-designed medications are used to block or interfere with cancer-specific molecules, achieving reduced toxicity and improved survival by selective disruption of cancer growth. Examples include tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), monoclonal antibodies (e.g. rituximab for B-cell lymphomas), ALK inhibitors (for neuroblastoma with ALK mutations) and BRAF inhibitors (for certain brain tumours).

With the advent of genetic testing, treatment can now be personalised to achieve the best possible outcomes in terms of efficacy, side effects and quality of life.
