Treatment of Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome is caused by changes in the quality or quantity of tears. The tear film consists of a lipid layer, an aqueous layer, and a mucin layer, which work together to lubricate and protect the eyes. Treatment for dry eye syndrome is tailored to the individual and focuses on managing symptoms and improving tear production. Common strategies include:
- Reducing Screen Time
- Avoiding Environmental Triggers
- Warm Compresses
- Eyelid Hygiene
- Dietary Supplements
- Using Lubricating Eye Drops
- Prescription Eye Drops (e.g. steroid / cyclosporine)
- Punctal Plugs Insertion
In severe cases, treatments may include the use of autoserum or amniotic membrane or the use of scleral lenses to protect the eye surface. The ophthalmologist will decide the most suitable and effective treatment accordingly.
