Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy

The condition can affect multiple organs, including the eyes, potentially leading to complications such as diabetic retinopathy, macular oedema, cataracts, glaucoma, vitreous haemorrhage, and retinal detachment.
When new blood vessels are detected, or when the macula is threatened by oedema and exudates, intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) and/or laser photocoagulation can help preserve vision. In severe conditions such as retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage or refractory macular oedema, surgical vitrectomy can help restore vision.
