The Department of Nuclear Medicine & Positron Emission Tomography is the first in a private hospital to offer full nuclear medicine clinical services in Hong Kong. It is our mission to provide top quality Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT), Nuclear Medicine, Radionuclide Therapy and Radiopharmaceutical dispensing services to the community.

Our Story

Established in 1995, we have been providing a variety of nuclear medicine examinations and therapies. A milestone in the development of Hong Kong's medical imaging, we became the first clinical PET centre in Asia after the setup of a medical cyclotron, a radiopharmacy laboratory and our first PET scanner 4 years later. Through decades of pursuit of excellence, we keep on enhancing our service with advanced technologies, state-of-the-art equipment as well as active participation in academic research to enhance specialty knowledge and refine PET tracer synthesis spectrum. All of these contribute to a solid foundation to expand our service scope and secure our leading role in the specialty.

In our early days, we imported the CTI RDS III medical cyclotron and our first PET scanner for oncology imaging and neurological assessments for conditions such as autism and Parkinson's disease. In early 2000s, we introduced the groundbreaking PET/CT scan technology, and became the only non-FDG production centre in Hong Kong with all the technical expertise to synthesise radiotracers tagged with fluorine-18, carbon-11, nitrogen-13, targeting specific clinical needs in oncology, neurology and cardiology imaging. Widely used in diagnosing certain types of cancer and neurologic diseases, some of these tracers are too short-lived for transportation, i.e. only 20 minutes or less. Therefore, patients from other local and overseas medical institutions are often referred to us for comprehensive imaging and patient management. 

While some centres are now experimenting with tracer production, we, as the pioneer in local PET/CT services for more than 20 years, maintain a solid lead with continuous knowledge acquisition and equipment upgrades to offer the most reliable and all-round clinical services to our patients.

Our clinical services include Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT), Nuclear Medicine (NM), Radionuclide Therapy (RNT) and Radiopharmaceutical dispensing services. Unlike other centres, our Nuclear Medicine Specialists provide consultation to ensure the provision of effective and personalised services based on each patient’s clinical needs. 

In view of the growing clinical demand, we continue to expand our molecular imagining service with the latest technology and facilities, including 4 on-site medical cyclotrons, 2 radiopharmacy laboratories, a QC laboratory, 4 Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanners, 2 Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT) scanners and a dedicated SPECT cardiac camera. 

In addition to diagnostic services, we have also incorporated a unique facility to provide a full spectrum of Radionuclide Therapy services for cancers and metabolic diseases. The current service scope includes Iodine-131 for thyrotoxicosis, Iodine-131 for thyroid cancer ablation, Iodine-131 MIBG and Lutetium-177 with DOTA-Conjugated peptides for neuroendocrine tumor, Lutetium-177 PSMA for prostate cancer, Lu-177 FAPI for cancer-associated fibroblasts, Radium-223 Dichloride for bone metastases of prostate cancer and Yttrium-90 Microspheres for liver tumours. 

We are committed to high safety and reliability in the manufacture of PET radiopharmaceuticals and radiotracers. Our Radiopharmacy and Quality Control Laboratories are well-recognised for our exceptional techniques and equipment. The facility is fully licensed by the Department of Health of the Government of HKSAR for production and sales of PET tracers; accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS); and with HKSH Comprehensive Oncology Centre, certified by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) as the only private medical institution in Hong Kong to conduct clinical trials for human used drugs. With more than 20 years of experiences and unparalleled expertise, the team proactively sources the latest and most useful radiopharmaceuticals around the world for importation to Hong Kong. We also supply PET tracers to other local clinical centres, indicating that we are fully trusted and affirmed by the community.

Services 


Nuclear Medicine 
Nuclear Medicine (NM) is a medical specialty which utilises radioactive substances to diagnose and treat diseases. Radiopharmaceuticals are injected, inhaled, or administrated orally to trace metabolic disorders in human body. 

Diagnostic Examination
We support wide-ranging imaging modalities such as Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography/ Computed Tomography (SPECT/CT) and Conventional Radionuclide examinations. Unlike radiological examinations that capture transmitted signals, in nuclear medicine we rely on radiation emitted from human body. It provides images with functional data based on cellular biochemistry and pharmacokinetics. 

Radionuclide Therapy
Radiopharmaceuticals labelled with alpha-or beta-emitting radioisotopes are used in radionuclide therapy. These radiopharmaceuticals follow specific biochemical pathways to reach target tissues, and the radioisotopes can achieve therapeutic effects by destroying diseased cells with high energy. 

Nuclear medicine is applied for specific medical needs and targets, which usually involve complicated clinical scenarios and require differential diagnosis using particular tracers. Therefore, its procedures are generally not for screening or initial treatment.

Technology

To enhance the standard and capacity of local nuclear medicine services, we continue to stay at the technological forefront by introducing state-of-the-art equipment to Hong Kong. Before service commencement, a series of stringent test will be performed on their new features and safety to optimise the settings and parameters as reference for local clinical usage.
