ERCP is performed to diagnose and treat problems of the hepato-biliary-pancreatic system. 

It allows the doctor to: 

• Examine the stomach and duodenum
• Inject contrast into the ducts to outline the pathology of the biliary tree and pancreas
• Obtain tissues for diagnosis 

Therapeutic interventions: 

• Stone extraction
• Biliary and pancreatic stenting
• Biliary drainage
• Biliary stricture dilatation
• Bile duct radiofrequency ablation
