Electrophysiology Study and Catheter Ablation
An electrophysiological study (EPS) is usually performed for symptomatic fast heart rhythms. By evaluating the heart’s electrical system, EPS allows doctors to diagnose heart rhythm abnormalities and determine strategy for ablation. During EPS, a catheter is inserted into the heart via a vein or artery in the groin. The end of the catheter has a special electrode tip to stimulate the heart and record its electrical activity. This allows doctors to identify the source of the abnormalities. Ablation involves heating or freezing small areas of heart muscle in order to cause irreversible damage and thereby prevent heart racing.
