Breast Care
Our one-stop breast care service provides emotional support and expert care
We understand the anxiety that comes with breast health concerns, which is why we not only provide cutting-edge medical care but also the emotional support and understanding you may need during your journey with us.
Recognising the significant increase in breast cancer cases among women in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital established the Breast Care Centre in November 1999. This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with advanced digital mammography technology, allowing the Centre to provide women with a comprehensive one-stop service.
The Breast Care Centre provides a wide range of breast care services, including breast screening, diagnosis and disease management, as well as post-operative care. Additionally, the Centre raises awareness in the community of the need for regular breast self-examinations to help women take charge of their breast health.
Services

Breast Screening Programme
Mammography screenings are especially important as they can detect breast abnormalities early, often before any symptoms or signs are present. Early detection also allows for more effective treatment and significantly improves survival rates among patients by approximately 20-25%.
At the Breast Care Centre, we offer state-of-the-art digital mammography with high-quality images that can be digitally enhanced to reduce the need for additional scans. Since November 1999, we've detected 31 early-stage breast cancers among 5,836 screened women (5.3 per 1,000). These malignancies were invisible to clinical palpation and could only be identified through screening mammography. Notably, 29% of these cases were at stage 0, with a remarkable 98% survival rate.

Lymphoedema Management
We employ advanced Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) devices (SOZO) to measure the lymphoedema index. This technology assesses intracellular and extracellular fluid volumes in affected limbs, enabling early detection of disorders and monitoring treatment progress.
Our skilled physiotherapists offer specialised lymphatic massage to alleviate upper limb lymphoedema, a common post-breast cancer surgery complication.
Supportive Care
We support breast cancer patients regain their self-esteem by providing information and supplies for surgical bras, breast prostheses and compression garments.
Education and Support
Our Breast Care Nurses offer expert pre- and post-operative psychological support to patients and their families. Informative videos are also available on topics such as post-operative care, adjuvant therapy*, coping strategies and dietary advice.
Since 2000, our Breast Cancer Patient Support Group has offered a platform for patients to share experiences and coping strategies.
*Additional treatments to reduce the risk of a recurrence of cancer.

Multidisciplinary Approach
Our weekly Expert Meeting on Breast Cancer Management brings together specialists in breast surgery, oncology, radiology and pathology. This collaborative approach ensures optimal treatment plans for our breast cancer patients while maintaining strict patient confidentiality.
We also host regular seminars and workshops, featuring international experts, to discuss advances in breast cancer management. Additionally, we conduct public health talks to raise awareness of breast cancer prevention and promote early detection.
