Thanks to HKSH Medical Group for its support and cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) over the years. On behalf of the research team of the HKUMed, I would also like to express my gratitude to The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation for sponsoring our study on liver cancer patients, for the prediction of tumor profiles and recurrence through MRI imaging in 2017. The relevant research project could only be carried out in Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital as it is uniquely equipped with advanced magnetic resonance equipment for accurate detection and quantification of liver fat and liver fibrosis. By assessing the severity of liver fat and fibrosis in liver cancer patients, it is possible to predict disease outcomes after surgery or treatment. The research project was completed with results published in a renowned international medical journal.

It has been over 20 years since I was awarded a scholarship sponsored by The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation as a medical student. I can still remember vividly the days when all HKU medical students attended classes in the "Li Shu Fan Building". Dr. LI Shu Fan and Dr. LI Shu Pui are sages in the medical field that every HKU medical student would know. As I am now engaging in teaching and research in HKUMed, I begin to realise that through The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation and The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation, HKSH has always been committed to promoting the development of Hong Kong’s medical and scientific research, and making contributions to public health.

Awardee of The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation Training Grants in 2017 for a training trip on lymphoma research at the University of Kiel and Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein in Germany

In 2017, I received a training grant from The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation and pursued a one-year postgraduate research training in the University of Kiel and Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, six months of which were sponsored by the Foundation. This University is where my mentor and my mentor’s mentor studied, and is a leading institution in lymphoma diagnostics and research for many years. Therefore, I was honoured to continue this legacy of academic and clinical tradition with the support of HKSH.

While in Germany, I studied under a distinguished professor who specialised in paediatric lymphoma pathology, and my research area was paediatric lymphoma. During my stay, I had the opportunity to present my research results in local and international conferences, and my research findings were published in leading academic journals:

I believe that my research will be beneficial to Hong Kong in the research and management of paediatric lymphoma. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Raymond LIANG and Dr. Edmond MA for their recommendations, as well as the support of HKSH and The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation, which enabled me to gain invaluable experience in the journey of medical research.

An awardee of The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation Fellowship in 2022 for the research project “The impact of integrative Next Generation Sequencing on Clinical Outcomes in Advanced Solid Tumours”.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the HKSH Medical Group. I am honoured to accept the award from The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation to support my research on the integration of Next Generation Sequencing technology in determining the clinical impact on patients with solid tumours. Under this study, we will develop the molecular tumour board established by Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital and The University of Hong Kong to establish and provide real-world prospective data in the era of precision cancer medicine in Hong Kong. This will provide a clinical service of excellence to our patients so that they receive the right treatment for the right indication based on the patients’ own unique tumour genomic sequence. I want to extend my gratitude to Dr. Raymond LIANG and Dr. Edmond MA and the ongoing support of HKSH.

Awardee of The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation Fellowship in 2022 for a 3-year project “Genetics Research Program for Personalized Medicine in Cardio-oncology”

Thanks to the sponsorships from HKSH Medical Group and The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation, I can embark on my research to further understand the pertinent area of cardiac health and diseases in cancer patients. Through this research, I hope to unravel the causes of cardiac toxicities in cancer patients who are to receive chemotherapy treatments, using state-of-the-art genetic sequencing techniques. Such endeavours will find ways to help prevent or ameliorate such risks. In addition, this study will also shed lights on the unified disease origins of cancer and heart diseases, and ultimately break new grounds in their holistic prevention and care.
