乳癌是本港女性最常見的癌症，近年數字有上升趨勢，特別是中年群。乳癌成因眾多，當中約一成個案是遺傳基因突變所致。
乳癌患者如有家族病史，醫生會因應不同情況，建議其本人及／或家屬接受遺傳診斷，確定病因是否與基因遺傳有關。一般建議乳癌患者最先接受診斷，一旦確認癌症是基因突變所致，便可按情況使用標靶治療（如適用），以及密切監察未有發病的家屬，及早預防和／或確診。
遺傳診斷有其限制，但只要輔以遺傳輔導，就能為病人及其親人提供最佳方案。不論當事人最終接受檢查與否，醫生都會以其利益為依歸，助其作出明智決定。
