The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation
Established by Dr. LI Shu Fan in 1963, one of the founding members and the former Medical Superintendent of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (the Hospital), The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation (the Foundation) was endowed with his entire shareholding in the Hospital, or 83% of the total ownership, for purposes conceived on the same broad principles of the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation in the US.

Since its inception, the Foundation has been driving local medical advances and promoting public health through the establishment of professorships, including the most recent RCSEd Dr Li Shu Fan International Professorship at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) and ten other endowed professorships at The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Additionally, the Foundation offers clinical scholarships, bursaries and grants to students as well as financial assistance to selected patients.
After more than 50 years, the Foundation successfully purchased the remaining shareholdings, becoming the sole owner of HKSH Medical Group and the Hospital. A taxable entity, the Foundation is run under a self-sustaining and not-for-profit model to fund the development of quality services and cutting-edge technology in medicine. With the operational costs deducted, all surplus revenues from the Group and its members are poured back into upgrading medical facilities, expanding medical services and supporting medical education and research.
