Congratulations to the 100th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital! It is my great honour to be a member of the Clinical Governance Committee.

The Hospital started small a hundred years ago to cater for community needs. Over the years, not only has it developed into an internationally acclaimed top notch medical service provider, but also a leading force in introducing advanced technology, conducting professional research and high quality clinical training and education for continuous pursuit of excellence. It comes as no surprise that it has attracted devoted followings not only locally, but also right across the region and Mainland.

My salute to all medical staff, frontline workers and hospital management for their relentless efforts and dedication in attaining such outstanding success and achievement that we are all proud of. May HKSH, with the concerted efforts of everyone involved, create more breakthroughs and reach greater heights in the next century.

Dr. William HO

Chairman
Hong Kong Private Hospitals Association

My hearty congratulations on the Centenary of Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospitals!

Imagine what it takes to achieve and maintain the crème de la crème of private healthcare in Hong Kong for a full century. And that’s just what HKSH has done – with the immense dedication of countless elite healthcare professionals under the helms of spectacular leaders: Dr. Li Shu Fan, Dr. Li Shu Pui and Dr. Walton Li.

On reading the history of HKSH, one not only admires the vision of its leadership to always be striving for the very best quality of care, the audacity of introducing new technology and systems to improve patient treatment and outcome, but also the unfailing confidence and faith to rise again amid adversities, be it a war, economic recession, or epidemics.

Dr. Walton Li was the founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Private Hospitals Association, and HKSH was the pioneer in achieving ACHS accreditation – a system subsequently adopted by all. Whether in supporting medical research, nurses’ education, doctors’ training, health promotion to the public, or philanthropic community programs, HKSH is the example to emulate.

I look forward to HKSH scoring even more successes in its next century of brilliance!

Hong Kong Private Hospitals Association

Prof. LAU Chak-sing

Dean of Medicine
The University of Hong Kong

No other tagline than ‘A Century of Clinical Excellence’ better summarises the accomplishments of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKSH). Being one of the leading private hospitals and pioneers in Western Medicine in Hong Kong, HKSH has garnered numerous ‘number ones‘ over the past 100 years: the first local hospital to hire local Chinese doctors to serve the local Chinese community; the first in Hong Kong or Asia to introduce innovative medical technology of the times such as the first X-ray, positron emission tomography (PET) scan, da Vinci Robotic Surgical Systems, MR Linac cancer treatment, to name a few; the first local hospital to receive the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) accreditation; the first private hospital accredited to provide specialist training in Family Medicine; and many more.

Indeed, the connection between HKSH and HKUMed began a century ago, when the foundation fathers of HKSH, Drs. Li Shu-fan and Li Shu-pui, early graduates of HKUMed, gave back to the community through their exceptional leadership and services at HKSH. Since then HKSH has been a leader in offering world-class treatment for patients, expanding its scope of services and scale of operation, and nurturing generations of doctors and nurses. As one of HKUMed’s important partners and philanthropists, HKSH has offered unwavering support for our students as a teaching hospital and in terms of donations. In the years to come, we look forward to joining hands in areas of medical education, clinical service and research for the betterment of the medical profession and most importantly, the well-being of the community.

Being a pioneer requires hard toil, and the perseverance to stay ahead throughout a century demands vision and determination. Let me congratulate HKSH for its achievements and contributions to Hong Kong all these years, and extend my best wishes for HKSH’s next centennial, and many centennials to come.

The Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital (HKSH)’s 100th anniversary is a cause for celebration at HKUMed, too. Throughout these 100 years, we have had a long, close partnership that has enriched us both and provided fruitful professional and academic exchanges between our institutions. It is an honour to be able to extend our congratulations to your centenary achievement.

Our association goes back even before 1922. The founder of HKSH, Dr Li Shu-fan, was a graduate of HKUMed’s precursor, the Hong Kong College of Medicine, in 1908 and he sustained a close relationship with the University up until his passing in 1966. He served as a member of the University Court before and after the Second World War and donated a large lot of land in the 1960s where we erected a building in his honour. The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation, established in 1963, has also donated large sums to support medical education and research at HKU.

One of the great benefits of our ties has been the opportunity for students to be trained in a private sector setting. This arrangement has been stepped up in recent decades with HKSH becoming a teaching hospital and then a member of the HKU Health System in 2015, together with Queen Mary Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital and the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital. Encounters with different kinds of patients, diseases and clinical conditions have been deeply enriching for both students and academic staff.

HKUMed has sought to give back by taking on responsibility for the HKSH surgical ward under our Clinical Academic Unit and through close involvement of current and retired staff with the HKSH. Over the past 100 years, our connections have become deeply intertwined and fulfilling. They lay the groundwork for what I am sure will be another century of close and productive collaboration.

100 years of service is truly remarkable for any organisation when advances and progress also go hand in hand. Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKSH) is one such successful organisation.

Starting as a private hospital for clinical services, HKSH has advanced and evolved to take part in medical education and clinical research since the late 90s. Its tasks have become similar to that of a medical school where medical education, clinical services and research interact with each other and provide a good environment to nurture medical students, and to allow those interested to pursue excellence in service and beyond. HKSH has prominent visiting doctors and in-house staff that together they provide an invaluable human resources to perform the tasks similar to that of a university hospital – teaching, clinical service and research.

HKSH has taken the lead in the development of an advanced private hospital which is patient-centered and internationally accredited. HKSH has strived to perform to a level commensurate with World standard. It has its goals well identified and implemented.

At the auspicious time of celebrating the Centennial of HKSH, I wish HKSH all the best, and a bigger stride into the next Centennial.

Congratulations to Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital on its 100th anniversary!

Aside from the excellent facilities, dedication to research and state of the art medical equipment, the hospital would not be as renowned if it wasn’t for its people. Right from the beginning, the founders emphasized on the importance of People, People, People; the “Three Treasures”. They provide the soul and spirit to any establishment. They deserve to be saluted!

Over the years, I have seen the hospital grow from strength to strength thanks to its people and leadership. Their commitment to care, efficiency and eagerness to serve, are remarkable and well renowned.

On this centennial celebration, like many other people, I salute the medical team and frontline workers and thank them for their relentless efforts. May the legacy continue!

It has been an honour and a privilege to serve on the Clinical Governance Committee of HKSH. Over the course of those meetings, I have witnessed at first hand the exceptional level of stewardship and professionalism that typifies the approach of Chairman Mrs. Sophie Leung, Dr. Walton Li, Mr. Wyman Li and their team in interactions with all the key stakeholders of the Hospital. In every instance, the focus has been on “patient care” and “staying true to the founders’ vision”.

HKSH is truly an iconic private healthcare institution that sets the standard as the “best patient care provider” in Hong Kong. It has not reached this position by chance, but as the result of extraordinary effort and dedication to achieve ever better medical outcomes, world-class technology adoption, and best-in-class nursing care.

On this auspicious occasion of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Hospital, I would like to convey my sincerest wishes for continued success in “patient care”, good governance, and exemplary service to the Hong Kong community long into the future.
