The Proton Therapy Joint Training Course co-organised by the HKSH Cancer Centre and the National Cancer Center was successfully held at the Beijing International Hotel on 21 and 22 June. The course aims to advance the clinical application of proton therapy, elevate cancer treatment standards in China, and foster international exchange and collaboration in medical technology. The event attracted medical professionals from across the country, including Hong Kong. Featuring inspiring keynote speeches, case studies, and experience-sharing sessions delivered by authoritative experts from mainland China, Hong Kong and the United States, the course provided a platform for in-depth discussions on the latest advancements and clinical applications of proton therapy, enabling participants to deepen their understanding of this cutting-edge technology and gain valuable insights into the practical application in their work.
As a global leading cancer management institution, the HKSH Cancer Centre launched the first proton therapy centre in the Greater Bay Area in 2023. The HKSH Proton Centre has so far successfully processed over 400 cases, accumulating valuable clinical experience.
Reflecting on the challenges of constructing the HKSH Proton Therapy Centre, Mr. Wyman LI, Chief Operating Officer of HKSH Medical Group and Director of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, said, "We overcame two major challenges. First, we have installed the world’s first vertically positioned proton therapy system within limited space. Second, we have nurtured a highly professional team with international calibre through more than a decade of dedicated efforts. Over the years, we have engaged in extensive collaborations with the world’s leading institutions, including Mayo Clinic, MD Anderson Cancer Centre, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the University of Florida Health through in-depth exchanges and talent development programmes."
