Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgeries

The vitreous humor and the retina are critical parts of the eye. Many diseases can cause pathological changes in the vitreous humor and the retina. Common retinal and vitreous diseases are:

• Vitreo-retinal degeneration
• Retinal tear and detachment
• Diabetic retinopathy
• Vitreous haemorrhage
• Pre-retinal macular membrane and macular hole
• Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD)
• High myopia macular degeneration

Due to the aging population and the high prevalence of high myopia in Hong Kong, macular disease has become a common cause of severe visual loss. In recent years, significant advancement has been achieved in treating these macular diseases. For example, Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a new method of using special laser to destroy abnormal choroidal neo-vascularization (CNV) and improve patient's vision.
