Floaters and Retinal Detachment
When we get older, the vitreous humor within the eyeball degenerates and liquefies. This will give rise to floaters. Floaters are moving opacities, and can be of various shapes and sizes (dots, circles, lines or spider-webs). When the vitreous humor contracts and detaches from the retina, this is called acute posterior vitreous detachment (acute PVD). Acute PVD can lead to retinal tear and even retinal detachment if no timely treatment is applied.
