What is Intra-ocular Lens (IOL)?
An intraocular lens (IOL) is an implanted lens in the eye, usually replacing the extracted cataract, or as a form of refractive surgery to change the eye's optical power. It usually consists of a small plastic lens with plastic side struts, called haptics, to hold the lens in place within the capsular bag inside the eye. Nowadays, IOLs are made of flexible materials like Acrylic and Silicone. Most of them are fixed mono-focal lenses matched to distance vision. However, other types are available, such as multi-focal IOLs which provide the patient with multiple-focused vision at far and reading distance, and accommodating IOLs which provide the patient with some visual accommodation.Monofocal Lens
A Monofocal Lens implants is the most frequently used lens implant in cataract surgery. It can provide very good vision-but only at one set distance-usually for seeing things at a distance such as for driving or going to the movies. It does not correct intermediate or arms length vision for doing things like playing cards or even seeing computer screens clearly, nor does it correct near vision for doing things up close such as seeing medicine bottles or reading, as these tasks require the correction of presbyopia. Thus patients electing to have Monofocal Lens Implants will be dependent on glasses for reading either some or most of the time in about 70% of cases.
← Toric Lens
In optics, a toric lens is a type of lens whose surface is a combination of a sphere and a cylinder. One surface of the lens is spherical, the other toroidal. Such lenses are used for correction of preexisting corneal astigmatism.

Multifocal Lens
A multifocal lens implant provides good distant vision and near vision after cataract surgery. It corrects both your distance vision and your presbyopia. For the vast majority of patients, having a multifocal lens implant means that you will be able to see at distance and up close without being dependent on glasses. They will likely find that they can drive, watch television, read or do crafts-without the need for glasses. Some patients will need reading glasses for mid-distant duties such as using computers or playing pianos.
Presbyopic Correcting LensPresbyopic Correcting lens is a kind of monofocal lens that can provide vision at multiple distances and improve night vision. Some patients will need reading glasses for short-distant duties.
