Our History

Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology was established at the end of 1980. As a new patient service at that time, it had to be set up from scratch. Advanced equipments were acquired for eye examinations, treatment and operations. With the persistent effort of our professional team of ophthalmologists and paramedical staff, the Department has been growing steadily over the years. It was relocated, renovated and expanded in the nineties, with more experienced ophthalmologists joining the team. One of them was Professor Guy Hugh Chan, who joined the Department in 1996 as Director of the newly established Refractive Surgery Centre at that time. Cataract Surgery Centre was set up later in 2003 to meet the increasing demand of patients. Moreover, we have been providing Privileged Service Packages for senior citizens since 2000 as a way to serve the community.

After more than 20 years of dedication, the Department is now fully equipped with the most advanced technology, aiming to offer comprehensive and first-rate services to our patients. We are proud of our achievements and will strive to remain as one of the most trusted names for quality treatment in Hong Kong.

Guy Hugh Chan Refractive Surgery Centre

Guy Hugh Chan Refractive Surgery Centre was established in 1996. It is the first and only one refractive surgery centre certified by Clinical Research and Statistics (CRS), a renowned group of clinical and research ophthalmologists in refractive surgery, to be the training centre in LASIK surgery in Hong Kong. Since its establishment, our Centre has accumulated one of the longest track records and the highest volume of LASIK surgeries performed in Hong Kong.

The Centre has a team of best qualified personnel. Our eye doctors and nurses are certified by CRS Clinical Research and Statistics Quality Assurance Program. Our engineers have received formal training in Germany, Singapore and the United States. Our optometrists have graduated from local or overseas universities and all of them have extensive experience in dealing with LASIK and other refractive surgery related issues.

Cataract Surgery Centre

As the population of Hong Kong ages, cataract is becoming more common. At the same time, there are tremendous technological advances in the past decade. Cataract surgery has generally moved from large corneoscleral wound ECCE (ExtraCapsular Cataract Extraction) to small corneal stab incision surgery (phacoemulsification).

In order to maximize the efficiency and to lower the cost of cataract surgery, a separate day surgery centre, specialized for cataract patients, was opened in March 2003. It is now equipped with 2 surgery suites, 1 consultation room, 2 ceiling mounted operation Zeiss microscopes, monitors and the most advanced phacoemulsification machines. We are able to perform cataract surgeries under topical, local or monitored anaesthesia. Patients have a choice of day surgery or inpatient surgery. With 9 experienced ophthalmologists and other honorary consultants in various medical specialties, we can provide the best cataract surgery for all patients.
