The Beginning (1922-1925)
Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital (HKSH), formerly known as "The Yeung Wo Nursing Home", was established in 1922 by a group of leading Chinese medical practitioners and prominent Hong Kong residents. The object was to provide hospital facilities for the Chinese community and for patients to be taken care of by their own doctors and trained nurses in a tranquil atmosphere and congenial environment.
The Yeung Wo Nursing Home was the only private institution catering to the needs of Chinese patients and practitioners in the early 1920s, when the other hospitals were either government- or mission-run institutions. Until then, Chinese doctors were unable to find a hospital to which they could, at ease, admit their patients for treatment. It became clear that more hospital facilities not under the auspices of the government medical services were needed for the indigenous people. .
