Radial Keratotomy
(RK)
RK (Radial Keratotomy) was
a surgery for low myopia before invention of refractive surgeries
using laser. RK is a procedure that entails placing radial incisions
in the peripheral cornea using a diamond blade. The central cornea
is flattened as a result and thus the reduction in myopia. The outcome
of RK is immediate and dramatic. However, as the resulting change
is less predictable, enhancement procedures may be required for fine-tuning
the initial surgery to achieve better uncorrected visual acuity.
RK patients may still need to wear glasses in some cases. It is very
rare to perform RK nowadays.
