How is it performed?

  1. Anaesthesize the eyes with eye drops.
  2. Place a speculum to hold the lids apart.
  3. Apply diluted alcohol solution for 30 seconds to loosen the edges of the epithelium and create an epithelial flap.
  4. With the epithelial flap moved aside, use an excimer laser to apply laser with cool ultraviolet light pulses to sculpt the epithelium.
  5. A medicine solution (mitomycin C) may be used to apply on the reshaped cornea for one minute to reduce the potential haze.
  6. Replace the epithelial flap.
  7. Place a bandage contact lens on the eye for protection and healing.
  8. Apply antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops.
