For the past few weeks, the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has caused tremendous panics in Hong Kong. With the fact that droplets can be one of the ways to transmit this pneumonia virus, it is not surprised to see medical suppliers are abruptly running out-stocked for all types of facemasks. At the same time, the sales of vitamin C supplements and lactobacillus-based beverages have also skyrocketed. Rumors claimed these remedies can protect one from being infected with SARS, do they really work?

Vitamin C supplements
Vitamin C has long been advocated for cold and flu prevention or cure, but these claims have been magnified. Though Vitamin C helps to fight infection and adequate intake will keep the immune system healthy. The benefits appear to be more in reducing the severity of symptoms than for prevention. It is also unclear whether supplements can produce similar benefits, the more the better thus may not be right. The daily Recommended Dietary Allowance of Vitamin C for adult male is 90 mg, female 75 mg, and an extra 35 mg for smokers. Meeting the requirements is easy if we focus more on fruits, especially citrus, and vegetables.

Foods Portions Vitamin C (mg)
Cantaloupe One third 83
Grapefruit (pink and red) One 94
Orange One large 80
Broccoli Three quarters spear 106
Cauliflower 150 gm 73
Pepper, sweet, green One 95
Large routine intake should not be encouraged as excessive amounts of Vitamin C (over 2000 mg/day) may cause mild diarrhea, and may interfere with stools test for blood or other laboratory tests.

Probiotics
In Hong Kong the habit of taking Lactobacillus-based drink is over 30 years. Data indicated Probiotics decrease diarrhea, improve digestion and enhance the immune system. Yet no evidence have proved on the prevention of SARS.

As there is no strong scientific support to indicate any one single food can prevent infectious disease, the golden rule of a well-balanced diet should always apply. And remember to drink plenty of fluid, ensure proper personal hygiene, get regular exercise and adequate sleep, your health can thus be well kept!
