- OT : operation privileges are granted in accordance with the specialty / training of the doctor.
- OT : minimally invasive surgical privileges are granted in accordance with the specialty & training of the doctor.
For gynaocology - there are 2 levels, intermediat and advanced.
- For Privileges to perform minor/intermediate procedures:
- Gynaecologists who have been accredited by the HKCOG at the Intermediate Level (Levels 2 & 3 of the HKCOG Guidelines, excluding all Myomectomy and Hysterectomy operations). - For Privileges to perform major/advanced procedures:
- Gynaecologists who have been accredited by the HKCOG at the Advanced Levels (Levels 4 & 5 of the HKCOG Guidelines, including all Myomectomy and Hysterectomy operations).
- For Privileges to perform minor/intermediate procedures:
- Not applying to Doctors with privileges item 3.
- There are 2 levels, Provisional & Full.
Surgeons who already have minimally invasive surgery privileges of the Hospital may apply for :
- Provisional Privilege
- Surgeons who already have minimally invasive surgery privileges of the Hospital and have undergone a recognised course of training and have been certified.
- Surgeons who already have minimally invasive surgery privileges of the Hospital, and
- have been certified to have performed not less than 5 cases of Robotic surgery independently in another institution and assessed to be competent; or
- after certification, have undertaken a minimum of 5 cases as a primary surgeon operating together with a mentor-surgeon, preferably in the same specialty, appointed by the Hospital and are assessed to possess the necessary skill by the Hospital Management Committee.
- Granted to Doctors after separate application.
- IVF (male procedures) granted to urologists upon application.
3. Authority for granting or revoking hospital privileges
- The authority to grant Hospital Privileges of the Hospital to registered doctors and dentists rests with the Hospital Management Committee.
- The Hospital Management Committee is entrusted with the responsibility to review and deal with matters relating to Hospital Privileges granted to doctors and dentists from time to time as considered necessary.
- The Hospital Management Committee reserves the right to suspend or revoke Hospital Privileges to doctors and dentists.
- Who have committed any criminal offence or serious professional misconduct;
- Whose registration has been suspended or removed from the General Register of the Medical/Dental Council of Hong Kong;
- Whose management of patients does not measure up to a standard of high quality medical practice as judged by their peers;
- Who have been reprimanded by the Medical/Dental Council for unethical conduct or behaviour.
- Who have been found to be unfit, physically or mentally, to continue to practice medicine;
- Who have repeatedly breached the policies, regulations and practices laid down by the Hospital.
4. Requirement for application
Any doctor or dentist must satisfy the following requirements before his/her application can be considered by the Hospital:
- Current registration with the Medical/Dental Council of Hong Kong.
- Specialist registration in a specialty with the Medical/Dental Council of Hong Kong; or Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, or equivalent qualification / training.
- Evidence of good clinical training and experience (in particular relating to special procedures).
- Good character and professional standing.
- Subscription to malpractice liability insurance for private practice.
5. Application Procedures
- Recent Photo
- Completed application form;
- Copy of identity card;
- Copies of diplomas and certificates;
- Curriculum vitae;
- Copy of Medical/Dental Council registration certificate;
- Copy of current annual practicing certificate;
- Copy of specialist registration certificate;
- Copy of current malpractice insurance certificate (in the field of practice);
- Two letters of reference from local medical/dental practitioners of good standing;
- Evidence of training in special procedures (as applicable).

Completed application form together with the documents listed under paragraph 5.1 should be returned to the Hospital Administration Office at 38/F, Li Shu Pui Block, Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, 2 Village Road, Happy Valley, Hong Kong.
Application processing normally takes 6-8 weeks. A letter will be sent to applicants by post to notify them their application result.
If joint management of patients is required, doctors should apply for the temporary hospital privileges, which such privileges may be granted to doctors / dentists for a specified period of time in a specified capacity. The applicant is required to complete a form to provide information for consideration by the Hospital Management Committee. The applicant must possess malpractice liabillity insurance for private practice.
6. Updating of Doctor's information
Doctors are required to send copies of their annual practicing certificate and malpractice insurance certificate, after annual renewal, to the Hospital to update the doctor's database. The Hospital conducts an updating of all doctor's personal data once every three years. Doctors are also required to inform the Hospital in writing whenever there is any change in personal or other data.
